Challenging Texts/ Übersetzendes Lesen
It is often noticed that English scientific writings are easier to read and understand than formal German scientific papers. We will reflect upon differences in “readability” ranges in English and German challenging texts, and discuss differences from word level (words, synonyms, paraphrases) to sentence level, moving on to their development and variation in discourse patterns (coherence und information sequencing).
Working with authentic scientific English and German writings, we will show how systematic parameters can be used to vary one’s own readability when writing texts according to readers, language norms in English and German and acquire the ability of systematically changing and varying one’s own writing style accordingly .
